Although most graduate students must work directly with their home department throughout the approval process, they are welcome to utilize the resources in the Study Abroad Office to help with program selection and possible funding sources. The resources in the Study Abroad Office are geared more toward undergraduate students, but have helped graduate students narrow their selection. Any research, internship, or independent program must be approved through a graduate student's home department. Graduate students are expected to complete a process that is similar to the undergraduate study abroad contract, particularly if they plan to travel to countries under current State Department warnings or alerts.
As each department has different graduation requirements, some programs may be more flexible than others in allowing students to participate in study abroad program. Given its reputation as a leader in international education both on the Pitt campus and beyond, many graduate programs have integrated study, research, and internship options abroad into the curriculum.
In additional to overseas education, graduate students are also encouraged to pursue area or thematic certificates through the University Center for International Studies.
