The University of Hyderabad and the Study India Program

UNIVERSITY OF HYDERABAD:

The University of Hyderabad was established by an Act of the Parliament of India in 1974 as a Central University. Over the years, the University of Hyderabad has emerged as a top ranking institute of higher education and research in India. The University is located about 20 KM from the city of Hyderabad on the old Hyderabad-Bombay highway. The scenic, serene, and sprawling campus stretches over nearly 2300 acres of land. You will need a bicycle (which will be provided for you) to navigate it efficiently. On the campus, there will be some shopping and restaurant facilities.

Remember, you will be on the University of Hyderabad’s campus during their term break which will mean that less students than normal will be running around.  The city itself is a short drive via taxi from the SIP Guest House. You can request a taxi from SIP’s program assistant for a nominal cost. You must, however, book your taxi in advance.

THE SIP PROGRAM:

Dr. Aparna Rayaprol is the coordinator of the SIP program. She is an alumna of the University of Pittsburgh’s Sociology Department. Upon earning her Ph.D. in Sociology, she returned to India where she helped establish the SIP program. Housed on the University of Hyderabad’s campus, the SIP program is host to a wide variety of international students each year from all corners of the globe. In fact, you will likely see students from Scandinavia in the Guest House this summer with you.

The SIP Office is located on the University of Hyderabad’s campus and is readily accessible to you. Please see the campus map and the Guest House’s location denoted on the previous page.

GUEST HOUSE INFORMATION:

The guest house is air-conditioned for your comfort and will provide basic amenities. Your bed will be different from that to which you are accustomed. Instead of the box-spring and mattress combo, you will have a platform and mat on which to sleep and a small cover under which to sleep. The University of Hyderabad and SIP have their own water purifier. Thus, the water which you may drink at meals will be sterilized. Meals will be provided for you at the Guest House. Your meals will be in the traditional South Indian style, mostly vegetarian. However, the chefs in the Guest House are accustomed to the Western palate and may be able to provide an occasional Western dish for you upon request.
