The University of Pittsburgh’s School of Social Work is pleased to introduce a new academic program in London, England. This one-credit course focuses on race relations in the UK and will be offered to undergraduate and graduate students University-wide.

Learn About the Race Relations in Britain Program!

The Program

The purpose of the course is to learn about race relations in Britain including such topics as immigration, segregation, racism, discrimination, national and local policies and programs, and community services.

Students will enroll in the  following course: SOCWRK 1088 (for undergraduate students) or SWGEN 2088 (for graduate students).

Course Objectives:
The purpose of this course is for students to gain a general understanding about:
1. British race-related problems in immigration, segregation, intergroup relations, education, employment, housing, criminal justice, health, and mental health (with in-depth knowledge of one or two of these areas)
2. The causes and implications of racial problems in Britain
3. British policies, programs, and community services to address racism and discrimination
4. Similarities and differences between racial problems and policies in Britain and the U.S.
5. Effective race-related policies in Britain that could be adapted by the U.S.

Prior to the trip to London we will view a DVD on racism in modern Europe and discuss readings. In London we will meet with at least four experts and one community organization that serves racial/ethnic minorities. Students will be asked to keep a journal for the class meetings in Pittsburgh and London and will write a paper for their area of focus. The course grade will be based 20% on attendance and participation in class meetings, both in Pittsburgh and London, and 80% on the final paper. The paper is expected to be 10 pages for undergraduate students and 12 pages for graduate students, typed and double spaced. A syllabus can be obtained from Ralph Bangs at rbangs@pitt.edu or Lynn Coghill at lcpitt@pitt.edu.

The course will be limited to 14 students, who will be accepted in the order that complete applications are submitted to and meet the requirements of the Study Abroad office. A waiting list will be maintained in case of student withdrawals.
