"You find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford."

-- Samuel Johnson

Program and Courses

The University of Pittsburgh is pleased to sponsor a program which is offered both fall and spring semesters in the heart of London, one of the most vibrant, artistic, and cultural cities in the world. Pitt in London affords students the opportunity to study the humanities, business, social sciences and communications in this internationally diverse capital city. The program is conveniently located in the Royal Borough of Kensington, just blocks away from the Kensington Palace and Gardens, Hyde Park, the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The Program:
The University of Pittsburgh collaborates with the Centers for Academic Programs Abroad (CAPA), the London-based organization which coordinates all of the on-site program logistics. The CAPA office and classrooms are located on Cromwell Road, a few blocks from the Gloucester Road tube station and minutes away from the Kensington Palace and Gardens, the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Students will take classes at the CAPA center or in other classrooms arranged by CAPA.

Courses are offered in a variety of disciplines by British faculty from various institutions of higher education in London. Optional internships with British organizations and businesses are offered to students interested in gaining valuable work experience in their desired field. Each course offered is worth 3 credits, except the Arts and Sciences London Internship which is worth 6 credits (CBA students earn 3 credits). All students must enroll in a minimum of 12 credits and can take a maximum of 15 credits. All credits and grades earned on this program (with the exception of internship grades) will be recorded on the Pitt transcript and figured into the Pitt QPA calculation.

Students will be taking classes and living with other American students. The best opportunities to meet the British include interning, living with a host family, or joining student clubs and societies at the University of London at Imperial College.

Housing and Meals

Option 1 - Student Residences:  Students will be housed in flats or dormitory type accommodations in Central London. Flats are furnished and kitchens are stocked with basic cooking utensils. Bed linens will also be provided. Students should bring their own towels. Students will be notified shortly before departure of their residence address and location.

Students will receive a £40 to help defray the cost of meals. Students receive a Zone 1 and 2 tube pass with this housing option.

Option 2 - Homestay: Students choosing to stay with a British family will have cultural interaction with a British family. This will be in an area of London no further than Zone 3, from which central London is easily accessible. This form of housing is most popular with students who prefer to not be living with just American students and who want to learn more about British culture. Each family is carefully screened and most are accustomed to having international students. Students living with a British family will have their own room which will include a bed with weekly change of linen, a desk, storage areas, chair, and lamp. Bathrooms will be shared with the family. Students should bring their own towels, a telephone card, and be prepared to do their own laundry. The family will provide both continental breakfast and dinner at home. Note that no meal allowance is provided with this option as two meals per day are provided by the family. Students receive a Zone 1-3 tube pass with this housing option.

Both families and students will complete host selection profiles which will be used by the housing coordinator to try to match the requirements of the student with those of the family.
