While in Germany during my Plus3 study abroad program, I was nonstop eating food. One of the main things I heard you had to do when abroad is try new food, and so I constantly was trying new food during every meal.

Germany is famous for all their different kinds of meats, so it was a perfect environment for me. I first had to try the famous Schnitzel, which is fried pork. Every single restaurant we ate at had Schnitzel on the menu, so I had it multiple times. It is always served with french fries and German potato salad, and every time it was really good. Then, Germany is also known for its sausage, and I tried multiple kinds. One morning, we had a traditional white sausage breakfast with pretzels and cheeses. Another day, we went to Munich and I tried Currywurst, which is served with curry powder and a special tomato sauce. It was my favorite sausage of them all. Lastly, I had to try Bratwurst, which is the most similar to a traditional American sausage found at the grocery store, but it is as big as the whole plate.

Majority of our meals were included in the program, but the meals that weren’t, many of the other guys and I looked for cheap meals. The German students told us about all the health regulations placed on foods, so us Americans got some fast food to see. We got both McDonald’s and Burger King, both being way healthier than in America. The food is overall less greasy and meat is less processed. Then, in addition to fast food, I fell in love with the ice cream. The gelato in Germany is so good and I had it at least once every day I was there. The good thing is, it only cost one Euro and fifty cents. I tried so many different flavors like Chocolate, Mango, Strawberry, Cookies and Cream, etc.

One thing that I did notice and thought was interesting is that the Germans love to eat Italian food. There are many little Italian restaurants throughout Germany, many of them serving pizza. One night, we did go to one of these restaurants, and the pizzas were huge! The restaurant was very authentic as well, showing just how much diversity there is in Europe.

Overall, the Germans love to eat food, especially meat. I fit right in with the culture and it was a great time trying all these new foods.
