Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor James V. Maher's Comments on Study Abroad at the New Student Orientation: August 27, 2009

"We encourage all of our students to take a semester abroad some time during their time with us. That does not mean that you have to do that, but about 25 percent of our students do study abroad. We would like every University of Pittsburgh student to have some international experience before getting a bachelor's degree.."

James V. Maher, Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor

Direct Enrollment Policy

Effective Fall '06 students may enroll directly in a foreign institution and seek to transfer the credit they earn to the University of Pittsburgh. During that period they are not enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh and are not counted in any enrollment model. Upon their return, their grade reports from the foreign institution are reviewed by their school to determine whether or not transfer credit will be granted. As long as students have registered for classes at the University within the last three consecutive terms (Fall, Spring, Summer), they remain active in the student system and can register for classes again after their time abroad. All financial matters are the students' responsibility, including the status of their financial aid. It is also the students' responsibility to provide their own health insurance. This policy does not apply to students enrolling in foreign universities affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh. The direct enrollment policy was established by the Office of the Provost.

Administrative Fee

Effective immediately: All University of Pittsburgh students participating in a study abroad program, regardless of its length, are subject to the Administrative Fee of $350.00. The Administrative Fee will be billed directly through billpay upon a student's registration for a study abroad program.

Scholarship Eligibility Policy

Beginning with the Freshman class of Fall 2008: Students who receive University scholarships (both merit-based and need-based) awarded through OAFA may apply those scholarships to Panther, Exchange, and Pitt-Recognized programs. The amount of the scholarship, however, may not exceed the tuition cost of Panther Programs. Out-of-State students who have scholarships that provide more than the amount of the in-state plus 50% differential will have the amount that can be applied to the study abroad program reduced to that amount. For Panther and Exchange programs, students whose University scholarships awarded through OAFA have a room-and-board component may apply that amount to the fee charged by the programs; for other programs, the room-and-board component of the scholarship will be paid directly to the student for living expenses abroad only if the University does not, in the judgment of the dean of the unit in which the student is enrolled, offer an equivalent Panther or Exchange program.

Scholarship support from University scholarships awarded through OAFA is limited to a maximum of one semester of study abroad unless there is legitimate programmatic justification for a second semester. Such program justification must be approved by dean of the unit in which the student is enrolled. This restriction does not apply to study funded from other sources.

Scholaship support from University scholarships awarded through OAFA can be applied to study abroad programs only prior to a student's final year of enrollment unless this is legitimate programmatic justification for study abroad in the final year. Such justfication must be approved by the dean of the unit in which the student is enrolled. This restriction is designed to ensure that the study abroad experience is integrated fully into the student's area of study. This restriction does not apply to study abroad funded from other sources.

These scholarship restrictions do not apply to unit-based or specific program-based scholarships (e.g. Nationality Rooms scholarships, UCIS scholarships, Engineering or Business scholarships), which are awarded pursuant to their own policies. Such scholarships may be used in conjunction with or in addition to University scholarships.

Since the University's student recruitment efforts have noted the availability of University scholarships awarded through OAFA for study abroad, those policies restricting the availability of such funding will be introduced with students who initially enroll and receive such scholarships in Fall 2008.

The Scholarship Eligibility Policy was established by the Office of the Provost.
