National Scholarship Competitions

Benjamin Gilman Scholarship
Sponsored by the US Department of State, Bureau of Educational Affairs. Applicant must be receiving need-based student assistance from the Federal Government to be eligible. Visit www.iie.org/gilman/ for more information. The deadline to apply for the spring and summer 2010 competition is October 6, 2009.

  • Congressionally funded scholarship resources available for both undergraduate and graduate students.
  • To be eligible, student must already be receiving Federal Pell Grant funding.
  • Awards up to $5,000 per student are awarded annually, with $4,000 being the average amount awarded to individual students.  An additional $3,000 may be available to some students studying “Critical Need Languages” (see website) abroad.
  • Provides additional funding to certain study abroad programs to Gilman Scholarship recipients.

Benjamin Gilman Scholarship for Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math
The US government has recently announced a special scholarship program for this coming summer (2010) for undergraduate students in the sciences, technology, engineering & mathematical sciences (STEM disciplines), who are also Pell Grant recipients, US citizens, and studying abroad through a US-accredited program for at least 28 days. IIE Midwest Grant
These scholarships are awarded to students attending a University or College in the midwest (western PA included). Visit www.iie.org/midwest/grants/ for more information.

Rotary Foundation International Scholarships

Bridging Scholarships
Sponsored by the Association of Teachers of Japanese, scholarships are available for students who study in Japan for one semester or a full year. Scholarship winners will receive a stipend of $2,500 for a semester or $4,000 for a one year program. Eligible applicants are undergraduate students majoring in any field of study. AIEJ (Association for International Education in Japan) Scholarships
Scholarships are available to Pitt students studying for one year at Kansai Gaidai, Ritsumeikan, or Konan universities. The scholarships can provide round-trip airfare, monthly stipend, and settling-in stipend. For more information, please contact the Asian Studies Center.

Freeman Asian Scholarships
Generous grants for at least 8 weeks of study in Asia provided by the Freeman Foundation. Visit www.iie.org/pgms/freeman-asia/ for more information.

David L. Boren Scholarships (formerly NSEP)
These awards are for mature students who focus on countries and languages outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Please contact Dr. Annagene Yucas for more information.

Fulbright Grants
The United States Congress created the Fulbright Program in 1946, immediately after World War II, to foster mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchange. Please contact Dr. Annagene Yucas for more information.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)
Offers scholarships for undergraduates for full year programs in Germany.

Masa Israel Grants
Students or students studying for a semester or full year in Israel may be awarded up to $200.00 for their program.
