The University of Pittsburgh is pleased to offer a summer abroad program at the University of Augsburg in Germany. The program is designed to afford Pitt students the opportunity to participate in German university studies and to experience German culture. The program is well suited for independent and mature students.

The Program and Courses

THE CITY OF AUGSBURG

Augsburg is in the Federal State of Bavaria in beautiful, southern Germany. An old city, Augsburg has many cultural offerings such as theater, opera, museums, and music. It is close to Munich, the Bavarian Alps and Lake Constanz, as well as the famous castles of Ludwig II of Bavaria. Augsburg has a population of 260,000 people.

UNIVERSITÄT AUGSBURG

Founded in 1970, the Universität Augsburg is one of the youngest universities in Germany and has an enrollment of approximately 14,000 students. The University is located on the periphery of the city. Public transportation is very good and students will have no problem gaining access to the city from the university campus.

THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM

Participants are directly enrolled in regular Universität Augsburg courses and/or in the university language center courses, all of which are taught in German. Students can design a highly individualized program based on the course offerings in Augsburg after consulting with Pitt's German Department Advisor. During the summer, the Universität Augsburg offers a wide range of courses in many subject areas. Students usually take three to four courses for a total of six to eight credits. For ARTSC students, studying at Universität Augsburg fulfills all but the non-western portion of the Foreign Culture requirement.

Orientation at Pitt - During the Spring 2006 term at Pitt, students selected to participate in the Augsburg program must enroll in German 1102 which will provide further language preparation, as well as general information about life in Germany. In addition, students must enroll in a 1-credit tutorial, German 1103, which will provide specific information concerning Universität Augsburg. Students will also be required to take an Augsburg German language placement exam at Pitt before departure. In the fall term, students will meet with the Study Abroad Office for an Enrollment Meeting and in the spring term for the SA Contract and Health, Safety and Security Meeting.

Program dates for the Sommersemester 2007 semester are as follows:

TBD

12 weeks during the summer. Pitt students leave for Augsburg after the Pitt spring term ends.
