Study Abroad Office Interns

By interning in the SAO, you will get to share all of the stories, knowledge, and pointers you have gained from your experiences abroad and are respected as members of the SAO team, performing meaningful work for the office. Primarily, you will serve as a Peer Advisor, helping other students through the study abroad process. You will also complete an intern project to benefit the work of the SAO (examples: literary magazine, outreach events, etc). Academic internships through the SAO are unpaid and generally require you to work for 9-10 hours per week to earn 3 credits. They also require that you have a faculty advisor of your choosing who must agree to support your internship and evaluate your work.

Ben is a senior studying political science and religious studies.  During the summer of his freshmen year, he was given the opportunity to travel to Israel for three weeks on a Hillel Birthright Israel trip and decided soon afterwards that he would love to study abroad in Israel for a longer period of time.  He returned in August 2008, and spent the next year studying at Tel Aviv University and traveling throughout Israel, Egypt, Jordan and Cyprus.  He had a truly incredible and eye-opening experience and would highly recommend others interested in studying abroad in the region to do so.  Studying abroad is one of the most unique and wonderful experiences a student can have , and Ben looks forward to assisting students in planning their own personal study abroad adventure!

Maggie is a senior here at Pitt studying History and Religion Studies.  She studied abroad in Northern Ireland for two weeks in May of 2008 and Fiji for a semester in the Fall of 2008.  Her experience in Northern Ireland was as an extension of a class that she took in the spring of 2008.  This was great because she was able to see the places and meet the people that we had learned about.  Her time in Fiji was a semester long and it was a tropical paradise.  Both of these experiences were life changing and she cannot wait to help you pick your own amazing program!
